Newell School District

The Newell Wrestling team went to Harding County today. It was a boys only tournament. Lots of great matches. Dyson was injured during his first match which he was still able to win, but had to stop after that. We hope he is back to normal soon. Bodie and Joe had many see-saw battles that ended in both wins and losses for them. Will had a great day and muscled his way into 4th where he lost by 1 point.

The last few coach interviews are scheduled over the next couple of days. Here’s a feature you will enjoy! Thank you Football coaches! Head Coach Wyatt Vander Vorst: I chose to become a coach because I enjoy helping people and coaching creates unique opportunities to get to know people and build relationships. I have always loved sports and enjoyed sharing that passion with others. Coaching football also appealed to me because of the strategic challenges and special bonds coaches and players develop throughout the season. I started coaching youth baseball when I was in high school and then in 2017-2018, I coached high school basketball for a year. In the Fall of 2018, I started coaching football at the high school level in Wilmot, SD as part of the Dakota Hills co-op. I continued coaching when I arrived in Newell in the Fall of 2020 and I have been involved ever since. My dad was the most influential coach in my life. Even though he never coached me at the high school level, he volunteered his time when I was in youth sports and made sure I never missed a practice or a game. My dad was also present as often as he could be, regardless of what sport or event was going on. He piqued my initial interest in football taught me the basics at a young age and motivated me through my years of playing the sport. Our main goals for this season were to build up our players and establish a foundation to build the team on. We had a lot of new faces and different levels of experience, so we were able to see a lot of growth from start to finish this year. I believe there is cause for a lot of excitement going into next year! I began playing organized football in first grade and played through my senior year of high school. I graduated in 2013 from Herreid and I played for the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines. I am married to my wife (my much, better half) Roni and we have two boys: Garret (3) and Waylon (1) Assistant Coach Tyrel Bonnet There were so many coaches that helped me along the way through high school and college, I wanted to do the same for others so I got involved in coaching. I think I took over coaching in 2017 but had helped for several years before that at the middle school level. Steve Schoenfish, inspired me the most as a coach. He supported his athletes and pushed them to reach their potential. My goals for the season were to continue to grow and build our program and the experience level of our athletes. I played high school football and wrestled as well. I had collegiate offers for both sports but chose to accept a Collegiate Rodeo scholarship. I graduated from Newell High School and obtained an Associates from Sheridan College and then a bachelor’s from Chadron State College. I have three children, two sons and one daughter. Roan (4) Rhett (2) and Cedar (1).

Just a few coach spotlights left. Here's another great one! Thank you Cross Country Coaches for a great season 2024! Head Coach Trev Fiedler:        I chose to coach cross country here at Newell because Kyle Sanderson, the former coach who started the program a decade or more ago decided to move on from Newell and he asked me before he left If I would take it over. I also had a family that has been in the Newell program for years reach out to me and ask me to coach as well. I couldn't say no to that! My wife was also a big factor in my decision, she has always wanted to get into coaching and hasn't had the opportunity yet so this way she can help from behind the scenes and live vicariously through me!      I started coaching Cross Country the fall of 2023.      My dad coached me in track and cross country during high school. He pushed me to be a good runner and strive to do the best I could. He was my most influential coach.      At the beginning of this season, my goals were to qualify the boys and girls teams for the state meet and finish in the top 10 with both squads. The girl's squad qualified and we technically did not qualify the boys team, however, we had three runners qualify individually which means we scored as a team at the state meet. I grew up in the small northwest Iowa town of George, I played almost every sport available growing up but had most of my biggest successes in Basketball. I did earn all state honors in both track and cross country, won several awards, both team and individual, within the conference and regions, and ultimately decided to run track and cross country for Black Hills State University.   I graduated high school from George Little Rock High School and earned my bachelor's degree from Black Hills State University, and continued to get my Master's degree from Wayne State College.       I have been married to my wife, Erin Fiedler for 10 years. Erin owns Peak Motion Physical Therapy in Spearfish and Sundance Wyoming. We have two kids a girl and a boy. Elsie is 5 and in Kindergarten in Newell and Isaiah is 3. Both are full of energy and keep us on our toes. Assistant Coach: Anna Erk I have always loved running and sports related to running. I was offered to coach track and field my first year here. It sounded like an awesome opportunity to help athletes be the best they can be at their event. I started coaching 20 years ago. I coached middle school track for 17 years and high school track for 1 year and this was my first year officially coaching cross country. I have also previously coached elementary basketball for 8 years. I was influenced by many coaches including Mr. Wince, Mr. Sanderson, Mr. Fiedler, and Mrs. Muckridge. I would have to say Mr. Wince inspired me the most. He coached a variety of sports/activities during my time here. He helped me to understand every athlete progresses at their own rate. Every athlete can make progress and their progress is what you concentrate on. Winning is great, but constant progress creates the ability to excel and be the best athlete they can be. I also learned that getting to know the athlete and using coaching as way to help the athlete learn life skills is the most important job a coach has. During this past year's cross country season, my main goal was to help the runners gain the skills to run faster and set personal records often during the season. I also wanted them to connect that their hard work gave them the results to get those better results which creates intrinsic motivation. My husband's name is John and we live on a ranch north of town. We have 3 kids. Rachel is currently in college. Sarah is currently a junior. Will is currently an 8th grader.

Our Spotlight on Coaches continues: (CORRECTED VERSION) Thank you for a job well done in the 2024 Volleyball season. Coach Hendrick: Hendrick obtained her undergraduate degree in Physical Education, Health, and Coaching from Black Hills State University and master’s degree in physical education and Coaching from Indiana State University. She is the current Athletic Director at Newell School District in addition to teaching Health and Physical Education. Coach Ginsbach: Why did you choose coaching? I thought it was a good way to become more involved with school activities. I've always enjoyed playing or watching volleyball, so I figured it would be a good one to coach. When did you start? This year was my first year of coaching. I really enjoyed it, so I hope to continue next year. What coach inspired/influenced you the most? That's a toss up between Teresa Pittman, my volleyball coach, and Mr. O, my FFA advisor. They both continued to push us to better ourselves and teach us life lessons that could be used for the rest of our lives. What are your goals for the season? My goals for the season were to help the girls improve, make sure everybody had the opportunity to play, and overall, to have fun. Your background: High school/youth years in the sport I played volleyball all 4 years of high school. Where did you graduate from? I graduated from Newell. Family My husband, Todd, also graduated from Newell High School. Both of my oldest children attend Newell School. Victoria is a 7th grader, Jared is in Kindergarten, and Raina is 3. Merry Christmas

Big thanks to our 2024 High School Volleyball Coaches for a job well done! Cheyenne McTaggart: Growing up I had an immeasurable amount of passion for Volleyball. I had a couple amazing coaches that had become the largest role models and helped me in ways I cannot repay them for. I always had a goal that I would come back to the community that raised me and give back to them as they did for me. It happened to come to me in the form of volleyball, which could not have been more perfect. I chose coaching because if I can impact at least one girl the way my coaches did for me, I will be content. I started coaching littles in college and then my first year coaching high school volleyball was the 2023 season in Newell. I had two of the best coaches in high school. Coach Schrank (Hess) took me under her wing and became my life advisor. She was there for every step of my high school career and taught me so many life lessons. If it were not for her, I wouldn’t be the coach I am today. Coach K (Muck) was my head coach, and she saw and believed in me more than any other coach has, and I truly gave her credit for everything I know. She made me into the volleyball player I am today and the compassion I have is from her teaching. She took a chance on the freshman on the bench, and I couldn’t be more thankful. Our goal this past season was to start fresh. We had a lot of girls that had not started Varsity, and we were a brand-new team. I wanted to let them make a name for themselves and become confident volleyball players. I graduated from Newell in 2017. I started playing volleyball in sixth grade and I have not put down a ball since. I have played middle school, high school, and small leagues since then. After I graduated, I went to college at BH and graduated with two minors and two majors. I just recently got married to Craig Nelson and we have started settling down our roots for the future with our mini-Aussie Bex. Courtney Nelson Why did you choose coaching? I chose to coach due to my passion and love for the sport of volleyball. I enjoy watching the sport and seeing each player learn and grow throughout the season. For me coaching is more than just making the players better at the game but preparing them for the future. When did you start? I coached my first volleyball team in the beginning of 2024 for a club travel team. I felt that after being out of high school for 3 years that I missed the sport and wanted to teach others the knowledge I had gained from my experiences. What coach inspired/influenced you the most? The coach that inspired me the most was Coach Cru my high school softball coach who also was my English teacher. She was a role model to me through her knowledge of the game and the poise she had in teaching us new skills. While we became better softball players because of her we also grew as individuals due to her coaching style. Coach Cru is someone I could always talk to and receive advice from. What are your goals for the season? My goals for the season were for each player to find joy in playing volleyball while preparing them on and off the court. I always told the girls it did not matter if we won or lost if we each tried our personal best. I hope each of the girls were able to take something valuable away from volleyball season. Background I played basketball from 4 years old till freshman year of high school, softball from four years old till senior year of high school, and volleyball from 6th grade till senior year of high school. I graduated from Cleveland high school in Texas. Family My family is originally from Cleveland Texas. My parents are Tracy and Calvin Nelson and my siblings are Craig and Kayla Nelson.

Newell wrestlers were in Hot Springs Friday and Saturday. Friday was girls wrestling and Cody fought hard and was 4th in her bracket. Saturday was exciting with many grueling matches and 16 man brackets. Will got lots of experience, but came up short. Dyson- 5th place Joe- 8th place Bodie-8th place

Cody Winkler made her high school wrestling debut and represented very well. Her next meet is tomorrow in Hot Springs. The boys fought hard and had some wins and some some losses. Lots of tough competitors on all the teams. Everyone wrestled varsity today.

Welcome Middle School Boys Basketball Coaches Head Coach Dan High graduated from South Sevier High School in Monroe, Utah. He grew up in an area of Utah where everyone ate, drank, and slept basketball! They had amazing basketball programs all over the state. Growing up playing ball, and as a coach, he saw lots of really talented kids that, because they didn’t know the right people, didn’t have the right coach, or through some other reason that was no fault of their own, never had the chance to learn the skills to help them be able to compete at a higher level. Coach High wanted to take the skills that he had learned and be able to teach all the kids who wanted to, to be the best basketball player they could be if they put in the work. To Coach High, basketball is more than a game. It’s a life skill that teaches individuals to work hard, face adversity, overcome hardship, and find success through hard work. Learning to work as a team and finding joy in working with others turns into being a reliable part of the community and a better person overall. High began consistently coaching around 2010. He coached his oldest daughter’s teams, 5th-8th grade in Utah. Then was asked to coach the all-star teams in AAU leagues and Utah Summer Games through the state. Coach High helps players one-on-one as a “shooting” and “elite guard” coach, to help them get to the next level to help them achieve their goals. Inspiration came from one of High’s bantam basketball coaches, Shawn Smith. He helped High to become a 20-30-point-per-game scorer, and the “best defensive player”. “ Coach’s goals are to help inspire each athlete to reach their full potential, increase basketball skills, focus on fundamentals, and learn to let individual success and team success carry over into their academics. I want to help each athlete want to lift and inspire their teammates. Also, a big goal of mine is to build a basketball program at Newell School that the youth coming up will aspire to be a part of, so they will in turn work hard at a young age, to develop their fundamental skills and be excited to join the middle school and high school boys teams. He and his wife, Ashley have 5 children. The three youngest attend Newell School. Cooper is in 5th grade, Samantha is in 8th, and Kate is a sophomore. The others are married and have their own families. The Highs own a saddle shop, High Quality Saddles, where High builds saddles full time, and they work as a family selling saddles and tack all over the world. Welcome to Newell Coach High! Assistant Coach Cheryl Hohenberger is focused on constant improvement and enjoys seeing the team grow in their love for the game. We are delighted to learn she will also assist Coach High with the middle school boys' basketball team. Cheryl is married to Doug, and they ranch in the Newell area. She has four sons and four grandchildren, and her family spans from Bismarck to Summerset, Belle Fourche, and Mitchell. Coach Cheryl played basketball in high school in Faith. After graduation, she was asked to coach in a rural country school and later in Union Center. Hohenberger feels the Newell team of coaches is exceptional and intent on taking their teams to the top level of playing. Welcome Coach Hohenberger!

We are pleased to announce Chad Oliver as the head coach of the Newell High School Boys Basketball team. He is originally from Newell and graduated in 2002 from the Newell School District. Coach Oliver and our current High School Girls’ Basketball Coach, Luke Bonefield, played basketball together in high school. In fact, in 2001 the duo took the Newell School District to second place in State-A division. Only three young men on the current Newell High School team have played ball in the past. Coach Oliver feels this affords him an opportunity to grow the team from the ground up. Because of Oliver’s unique ability to bring out the best in each team member, the results will be measurable With a priority to enjoy the game above all else Coach Oliver motivates the team to a level up. His coaching goals are to constantly build a successful basketball program while developing outstanding young men. Coach Oliver’s roots run deep as a farmer/rancher in the Newell area. Married to his wife Liz, he has two young boys of his own. Elliott is in second grade and Korbin is in first grade. Balancing family with coaching while constantly keeping his team updated, spending hours of his own free time working with his team and never giving up on them is a constant challenge Coach Oliver cherishes. The Newell Irrigators wrestled in Lusk today. Dyson Eixenberger wrestled at 120 and placed 2nd. Cody Jones wrestled 120 and placed 6th. Bodie VanDerBoom wrestled 126 and placed 3rd. Joe Eaton wrestled 132 and placed 6th. Jesse Jones wrestled 175-JV and placed 4th. Will Erk wrestled 190-JV and placed 1st. Congratulations!
