Newell School District is located in Western South Dakota near the Black Hills and has just under 260 students in K-12. The school district covers a lot of land and some students live 30 to 45 minutes away.
The town of Newell was established in 1910 and has 600+ residents today. The Belle Fourche Irrigation District supplies water to the surrounding farmland, with corn, alfalfa, wheat, oats, and soybeans as most common crops. Many families raise cattle or sheep. At one time Newell was considered the “Sheep Capital of the United States.” The land north and east of Newell is prairie.
