The 1980 boys track scored one point on the first day of the SDHSAA State Track meet, by placing 5th in the Medley Relay.  They knew if they were going to make winning the meet reality, they were going to have to perform extremely well on day two.  Recording two meet records on Saturday gave them an opportunity to take home the championship. \r\n

\r\n

On Saturday, prior to the last event (1600 Meter Relay), team scores were Redfield 26.5 points, Newell 21 points, and Beresford 20 points. Redfield was not in the final race, so Newell had to finish no less than 2nd place and not let Beresford place ahead of them to win the State Championship.  The Newell team finished in second place, 3 tenths of a second ahead of the third-place team, and nearly 3 seconds ahead of the 5th place Beresford team. \r\n
