Elaine (Loeschke) Hewson started her teaching/coaching career at Newell High School in 1977.  She was hired as a PE teacher, eventually teaching math classes for a total of 34 years.  Along with her teaching duties, she was the head girls’ basketball coach from 1977-81.   She continued coaching basketball as the 7th and 8th-grade girls’ coach from 1986-90 and in 1991-92 she was the JV girls’ basketball coach.

Along with coaching basketball, Elaine was the head girls’ track coach from 1977-81. Elaine was the first volleyball coach for Newell when it was added as a sport in 1988.  The volleyball teams were the District 16B champions in 1989 and 1990.   She built the program and led the 1994 volleyball team to the District 16A and Region 8A championships.  This resulted in the school’s first state tournament appearance, placing 6th overall. In 2000 she retired from coaching high school volleyball after 13 years.  She continued to coach middle school volleyball from 1996–2010.\r\n

Elaine became the head coach for both the boys' and girls' golf programs from 1987-94 and again from 1996-2011.  Region B champions included the 1991 boys, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 2006 girls’ teams.  The 1994 girls’ team placed 3rd at the State B tournament.   Elaine also coached many top 25 individual medalists at numerous state golf tournaments.  Elaine coached golf for 24 years before retiring in 2011. \r\n

Elaine was also the recipient of many awards which included: 1996-97 Girls Class B Region 5 Coach of the Year, 1996-97 Boys Class B Region 5 Coach of the Year, 2005-06 Girls Class B Region 6 Coach of the Year, and 2010-11 Boys Class B Region 6 Coach of the Year and was selected to coach the 1995 All-Star Volleyball Team and the All-Star Golf Team in 2005.  \r\n
