GORDON HORGEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The South Dakota Education Association/NEA awards scholarships to Native American students who are
planning on entering the teaching profession. The Association may annually award up to two $750
scholarships for each academic year.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS - Four-year Scholarship (up to two awarded each academic year)
Criteria for application includes that the student must:
1. Be in the top quarter of his/her class as of January, of their graduation year.
2. Be a student in a South Dakota education institution.
3. Be accepted and/or enrolled in a South Dakota college or university.
4. Be enrolled in a Tribe or descendent of a Tribal enrollee. (refer to Indian Health Service/BIA

The following attachments must be included with the application form:
1. A copy of high school transcript.
2. A listing of the academic, extra-curricular and community activities.
3. Letters of recommendation from two school personnel and one personal reference.
4. A 300-500 word essay on the strengths and skills the applicant will bring to the field of
education.
A recipient of the scholarship will have the award extended for another academic year provided that he or
she has:
1. Been a full-time student in a teacher preparation program.
2. Maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average.
3. Maintained membership in South Dakota/NEA Student Program.

COLLEGE SOPHOMORES - Two-year scholarship (up to two awarded each academic year)

1. Be completing the sophomore year of college and enrolled in a teacher prep program.
2. Be a full-time student.
3. Have at least a 3.0 grade point average.
4. Maintain membership in SDEA/NEA Student Program.
5. Be enrolled in a Tribe or descendent of a Tribal enrollee. (refer to Indian Health Service/BIA
