A few minutes after 5 a.m. the fire alarm in the MS Gym area triggered. After investigation by myself, the custodians and the Newell Fire Department we found no source for the alarm. We are going to have an electrician come in today and inspect some areas of concern.

The Newell boys and girls has a great showing at the State Cross Country Meet in Sioux Falls today. The boys started the day off with their best races of the season and were rewarded with the best finish in boys school history. The team placed 3rd overall and only 2 points away from a State Championship. Runners included Ben Parrow was 11th, Nathaniel Kirby 17th, and Garret Winkler 35th. The girls followed up with a strong effort of their own. They also in is he'd 3rd overall. Lexa Burtzlaff finished 15th, Kayden Steele 21st, Rachel Erk 23rd, Austin Alexander 46th, and Stacy Mahaffy 5th. The two Newell teams scores were also good enough to be the Combined Team State Championship. Great performances and accomplishments all around. Can't ask for a much better way to finish a season.

So so very proud of these girls!! The Newell Irrigator volleyball teams came out on top this weekend winning their brackets in the spearfish tourney. Our season is over with the 8th grades record being 13-3 and 7th graders being 15-2! Congrats to all the other newell teams that won this weekend as well! Go Gators!

MS volleyball and football traveled to Harding County tonight to take on the ranchers. Football game got called early due to lightning with Newell coming up short by 2 points. The volleyball teams won both games bringing their records to 7-0 for the 7th graders and 5-0 for the 8th grade team! Good job boys and girls!

The Newell Track season came to a close today in Rapid. The Girls team finished 3rd overall as a team up to spots from last season and finished with 47 total points. Delaney Leber as named the Girls Class B Track MVP of the State Meet. In her last high school track meet Delaney finished 2nd in the 4x800 relay and won the 800 meter run tying a school record yesterday and today won the 1600m run and 400m dash. Also earning points for the girls today was the Medley relay finishing 4th, members included Lexa Burtzlaff, Rachael Banks, Kayden Steele, and Austin Alexander.

Dana Youngberg 12th in the disc and shot put
4x800 relay (Delaney, Kayden, Austin, and Lexa) finished 2nd and ran Personal Best
4x200 relay (Aryann, Rachael, Sydnee, and Taylor) finished 19th
Medley relay (Lexa, Rachael, Kayden, and Austin) won their prelim heat to earn a trip to finals
Delaney Leber has the top 400 time out of prelims setting her up for the Final on Saturday
Delaney also tied her school record in the 800m run on her way to win the race
4x400 finished 16th which had Kayden, Lexa, Stacy, and Kyla
The boys Medley relay ran by far their best time of the season and finished 15th
Payton Burtzlaff also ran the 200 and 400 meters in the prelims finishing 16th and 19th overall

Senior Project fair took place today. 10 seniors showcased the projects they have been working on throughout the year. Projects range from mechanic, genealogy, medical fields, ag fields, ect. They have put a lot of work into it and have also learned a few things about their futures. Good job seniors and thank you to those that came and saw what they accomplished.

The Newell High School Drama club is pleased to announce their fall comedy production, Tartuff. 7 PM on Thursday and Friday evening Nov. 16 and 17 and on Tuesday, Nov. 15th at 1:30 PM. All performances are free and will be held in Austin Auditorium.

One incumbent along with one new school board member have been elected to the Newell School Board during Tuesday’s school board election. With all precincts reporting, unofficial results show that current board president Todd Youngberg was re-elected with 116 votes, newly elected was Darren Alexander with 97 votes. Also running for the board was Alan Gifford, who received 83 votes.

Results of the state golf meet. The girls team ended up 16th. Adrianna shot an 89 on day 2 and ended up 9th, Abbie shot a 113 placed 68th, Kassidy shot a 139 placed 96, and Emma 147 placed 97. Boys team was 17th Dylan shot a 83 placed 45th, John 97 placed 77th, Huttson 100 placed 95th. We fell a little short of our goals but this is a great group of kids very proud of all of them. The 2 seniors will be missed and looking forward to seeing how the under classmen progress. Great season and good job to all the golfers.

Results of the first day of the state golf tournament. Girls team is in 13th. Adrianna is in 4th shooting an 84, Abbie 56th with a 105, Kassidy 96th with a 125, and Emma 98th eith a 139. The boys are in 17th. Dylan is in 62nd with a 92, John 69th with a 94, and Huttson is in 93rd with a 102. Good luck tomorrow.

Great day 1 at the State Track meet. Dana Youngberg finished 8th in shot put, Austin Alexander got 7th in triple jump, Delaney Leber won the 800. The 4 x 800 relay (Delaney Leber, Austin Alexander, Lexa Burtzlaff, Kayden Steele) finished 2nd.

Good job Newell golfers today at regions in tough conditions. The girls team qualified for state placing 2nd as a team. Adrianna was 3rd, Abbie 5th, Kassidy 16th, and Emma rounded out the team. 3 of the 4 boys qualified individually and will also play as a team at state. Dylan was 8th, Huttson 13th, John 15th, and Chase just missed qualifying Good luck to all the qualifiers at state in Sioux Falls June 5th and 6th.

Good job today to the Newell golfers at the pre region at Hart Ranch. Both the boys and girls teams took 2nd. Individually Dylan and John tied for 5th. Adrianna took 2nd. Good luck next Monday at Regions.

Congratulation to the Newell HS/MS track teams as they traveled to Lemmon today to participate in the LMC track meet. All the Newell athletes did outstanding. The Newell High School Girls team won the LMC with a score of 189 followed by Lemmon's 148.

The golfers had a good day in Wall under less than perfect windy conditions. For the girls Adrianna was 1st (medalist) and Abbie took 5th. Emma also had a good first tournament. For the boys John once again tied for 5th but lost in a scorecard playoff. Huttson, Skyler, and Caleb also had good days.

Newell golfers had a good first tournament. Caleb McGregor got 4th shooting a 67 on 9 in the junior high division. Caleb Mutchler shot a 114 in the JV division. Adrianna Wheeldreyer was the medalist in the girls varsity with an 84. Abbie Nelson shot a 112 placing her 6th. John Jackson shot a 92 tieing for 5th. Huttson Weeldreyer shot a 116, Skylar Gartamaker 114, and Kai Banks 114.

The National Honor Society is putting on their annual blood drive Thursday, March 23rd in the MS gym. The blood drive begins at 8:30 with the last appointment time of 2:45. Community Health Nurse will be here on March 21st to administer the required medications (TDAP and Menniococcal) to the 5th graders and to anyone age 16 years of age or older. The forms that the parents needed to sign for authorization were sent home with the 5th graders, Juniors, and Seniors.

Last state wrestling update. Lane finished the season 6th. Very proud of both him and Dylan on the careers they had for Newell.

The Boys Basketball District tourney will begin on Monday February 27th. Newell vs. Takini in Newell at 6:30. The district semi-finals will be held in Faith on February 28th with games at 5:30 and 7:00. The district finals will be held at Spearfish High School on March 2nd begining at 7:00

Congratulations to the Middle School Boys Basketball team on their 2nd place finish in the LMC tourney. Team members were: Ryan Hohenberger, David Morrell, David Anderson, Corbin Mackaben, Jaden Tennis, and Braydon Cox, Colton Burtzlaff.

State wrestling update after session 3: Lane went 1-1 winning his first and then losing a close one. He will wrestle this afternoon for 5th place.

State wrestling update after session 2: Dylan won his 2nd match and then lost another close one to finish one match from placing. He had a very good year. Lane lost his quarterfinal match but came back to win his 3rd match to get into tomorrow and the placing rounds. He will wrestle tomorrow to see how high he can place.

State wrestling update: Lane won his first one by fall. Dylan lost a close one 1-0. They will both wrestle again this afternoon.

There will be a K-12 assembly tomorrow, Wednesday February 22 at 12:47 in Austin Auditorium. The assembly is to celebrate FFA week and also to wish Lane Schuelke and Dylan VanDerBoom good luck as they leave for the state wrestling tourney this weekend.

District 16B Tournament Tuesday February 21st in Harding Co. 5:30 - Faith vs. Harding Co 7:00 - Newell vs. Bison

Good job newell wrestlers at regions. Lane took 1st at 160 and Dylan was 3rd at 145. Both will be heading to state next week. Marvin, Garrett, Caleb, Jerome, and Chase all competed well. Looking forward to good things next year and in the future. Good job to all the wrestlers.

Good Job Newell Senior Government class on their presentations at the We The People Showcase in Spearfish last Thursday. They presented on topics dealing with the Constitution to a panel of judges that ranged from lawyers and judges to college professors. Lane Schuelke, Blake Geddings, and Riley Leber were Unit winners.

Tuesday, January 24, 2017 there will be free admission as well as parents night for the HS Boy Basketball team. The introduction of the players/parents will take place before the start of the varsity game. There will also be the presentation of the Girls Cross Country State Runner Up banner. Please come and help honor these athletes.

The cast of "Gossip" performed at the regional one act play contest in Pierre yesterday. Abbie Nelson received individual honors in the form of an outstanding actor award for her portrayal of Andy in Newell's performance.

Congratulations to the Newell FFA Ag Communications team. They earned a 2nd place finish at the District 5 Regional competition and will be going to State in December. Members are: Carrie Wetz, Taylor Vavra, Jessica Heil and Caleb Mutchler.

Congratulation to the Newell High School Girls Cross Country team on their outstanding State Performances. Delaney Leber finshed 5th, Kayden Steele finished 14th, Austin Alexander finish 29th and Lexa Burtzlaff finished 33rd; with the above finishes the team finished an outstanding 2nd place as a team. Nathaniel Kirby and Dylan VanDerBoom represented Newell School in the boys division very well with 59th and 97th place finishes. Congratulations all.

Dakota Players Theater
The Dakota Players Theater is coming September 19th-24th. Auditions are Monday, September 19 from 4:00-6:00 in Austin Auditorium. Grades K-8 are invited to audition. Practices will start at 4:00 each day, and run until 8:00 for some performers. Practice times for the week will be sent home after auditions. If your child is asked to stay late, please send a sack lunch. Performances will be Friday, September 23 at 5:30 and Saturday, September 24 at 2:00. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students!

Yearbooks from last year are on sale for $45 and may be picked up in the high school or middle school office.
