Paul Georgas Memorial Award

Paul Georgas was a special education teacher at Rapid City Central High School, teaching in the Rapid City Public Schools from 1972-2004. In 1962, as a Greek immigrant to Rapid City, SD, Mr. Georgas integrated into the Rapid City Public School system and attended North Junior High School before attending Rapid City High School. At Rapid City High School, he proudly represented the Cobblers in multiple sports including football, track and field, and wrestling. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1968 and went on to attend Black Hills State University from 1968-1972. Mr. Georgas highly valued education and encouraged all his students to reach their fullest potential. He was an educator, a mentor, and a supporter of extracurricular activities, particularly football, wrestling, and track and field. Mr. Georgas devoted much of his life to special education and his students. To honor his dedication to education and sustain his support of lifelong learning, an educational award has been established to assist a deserving high school graduate pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education.

Award Detail: This award is a one-time $1000 award to one student based on academic merit, participation in extracurricular activities and community service, one letter of recommendation from one of the applicant’s current or former teachers, and a personal essay.

Eligibility: To apply, the student must be a high school senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education at a four-year South Dakota college or university following high school.

Selection: The recipient will be selected by members of the Georgas family and announced at the respective school’s scholarship awards night. Funds will be directly given to recipient in the form of a check addressed to the student’s intended college/university.
